WELCOMING MESSAGE FROM IMAM PRESIDENT
Dr Jeffrey Abu Hassan
The time has come again for us to again urge all to attend our IMAM Annual Scientific Conference 2018 (ASC2018).
From the north in Kangar, Perlis in 2017, this year it will be in central Malaysia in Shah Alam in the state of Selangor.
Selangor, the state that originated Peduli Sihat which will be the template for the national health scheme for the less fortunate in our society.
Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Selangor has graciously accepted to partner us in the ASC this year. We are grateful for this.
These are exciting times, as we have a new government with both the PM and DPM being doctors. A first in the world? We however have a new Minister of Health who is not a medic but a toxicologist from Imperial College. We hope that he will be able to detoxify the few residual unhealthy cultures from the Ministry of Health and make it an exemplary Ministry. We have invited him to attend and officiate the opening ceremony of this years ASC.
Our theme this year is on those who have been left behind in society, those who have had to flee their hearths and homes due to strive, and those who live and try to survive on the margins and fringes of society. We will discuss how we as the medical profession can help them and maybe even integrate them into our society.
We have invited speakers of international standing to speak on these issues. We will see how we can together with the Ministry further help alleviate their sufferings. These include speakers from United Nation (UN) University International Institute of Global Health (IIGH) and the International Organisation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. Datuk Dr DG has also agreed to deliver this year’s Az-Zahrawi address.
We will demonstrate how IMAM, via IMARET(our relief wing) ,the MOH, and the Ministry of Defence have worked together to run the Malaysian Field Hospital in Cox Bazaar. We have also done cooperation before for the massive East Coast floods in 2016. Indeed it is a beautiful example of how NGOS, and ministries can and should work together in times of crisis.
We will have our fund raising dinner this year as usual to fund our relief activities. We intend to invite the Deputy Prime Minister and her husband who is the Patron of IMAM.
So, we request that you attend and bring as many friends from the fraternity that you can. InsyaAllah it will be a meeting to remember and benefit from.
See you in Shah Alam!
Salam Malaysia Baharu
Dr Jeffrey Abu Hassan
